Montessori

Born in Dr Maria Montessori was the first woman medical doctor in Italy. She gained degrees in philosophy and anthropology.  Working firstly with children with learning disabilities, and then with children from disadvantaged families, Maria Montessori recognized that children have an innate desire to learn.

In accordance with the principles of Dr Maria Montessori, the Margaret River Montessori School emphasises the following:

• Education is an aid to life and preparation for it.

• The potential for each individual’s development should be respected and nurtured.

• Integration of the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical and social aspects of life.

• The experiences in school should be linked with the world outside.

• There should be a diversity of social groupings.

• The adult’s role is one of a guide and observer.

• Learning occurs in a variety of ways and should be suited to the children’s needs; it is:

Largely active

Often self-correcting

Individually paced

Able to encourage independent learning

Unlimited in scope

• The environment  ”reaches” the child through its:

Richness

Order

Scale

Attractiveness

• By balancing freedom and discipline, a capacity for self-direction results.
